Danger on the Swings
While swinging in the back yard was my joy, therapy and solace, it was not without danger. The metal used to make the chains on which the seat rested was very thick but soft. After many hours of use, the links would become worn and eventually so thin that they would snap. When this happened, I would go sailing forward into the air until I landed with a painful thud.
Despite being something of a wimp (then and now), this danger was not sufficient to keep me from swinging. Even though the knowledge that I could go flying off into space was always with me, I continued to prefer swinging to all other activities. How true this lesson learned so young that what we love most can also bring us much pain.
